What is swine influenza?
“Swine flu”, is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease of pigs, caused by type A influenza
Most commonly of the H1N1 subtype
Incubation average is 7 days.
How do people become infected?
People usually get swine influenza from infected pigs; Human-to-human transmission has occurred but was limited to close contacts and closed groups of people.
Is it safe to eat pork and pork products?
Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products are safe. The swine influenza virus is killed by cooking temperatures of 160°F/70°C
Signs & Symptoms
Signs & Symptoms are similar to any influenza-like-illness: fever and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and runny nose, body aches, and possibly other associated symptoms, such as nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea.
Treatment.
Symptomatic treatment,
Influenza antiviral drugs are available to treat and/or prevent swine flu. The drug is oseltamivir (brand name Tami flu)
Standard Precautionary Measures
Measures are similar for any infectious diseases with a potential for direct transmission from human to human.
Wash your hands often with soap and water to remove germs from your skin And helps prevent diseases from spreading.
always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and put your used tissue in a wastebasket.
Report to your doctor if you develop influenza-like-illness signs & symptoms.
